The DNA Family Check Twin Test conclusively determines if twins are identical (monozygotic) or fraternal (dizygotic). Appearance alone can be misleading when identifying twin zygosity. Identical twins may look different, while fraternal twins can appear very similar.
At birth, doctors try to determine if twins are identical or fraternal by examining if they share a placenta and sac. However, this method is only accurate about 75% of the time. Identical twins can develop in separate sacs, and fraternal twins’ placentas can fuse, appearing to be one.
The only definitive way to establish zygosity is through DNA testing. Our simple cheek swab allows easy, painless at-home sample collection from infants to adults. Simply return your samples to our AABB, ISO 17025, CLIA accredited lab using the prepaid shipping label, then securely access your results online within 1-2 business days.
How it works
Identical twins occur when one fertilized egg splits into two, resulting in two embryos. They share 100% of their DNA because they originate from the same egg and sperm. Fraternal twins, on the other hand, are born when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperm, resulting in two separate embryos. Like typical siblings, fraternal twins share about 50% of their DNA.
The DNA Twin Test is 100% accurate in determining zygosity. Our AABB, ISO 17025, CLIA, CAP accredited laboratory conducts each test twice to ensure total accuracy.
Once the samples arrive at our AABB and CLIA accredited laboratory, your results will be ready in just 1-2 business days. You can easily keep track of your test status within your secure online portal, and we’ll notify you the moment your results are available.
Results are presented in a clear and simple format. On the second page of the report, you’ll find a clear statement indicating if the twins are ‘IDENTICAL’ or ‘FRATERNAL’. You can also compare the DNA profiles provided in the report for confirmation.

Physical appearance can sometimes provide clues about whether twins are identical (monozygotic) or fraternal (dizygotic). Identical twins often look very similar, with the same hair color, eye color, and general features, because they share 100% of their DNA. Fraternal twins can look similar, like any siblings might, but can also have significant differences in appearance because they share only about 50% of their DNA.
However, relying solely on physical appearance can be misleading. Identical twins might not look exactly alike due to environmental factors, and fraternal twins might look very similar, leading to confusion. In addition, as twins age, their appearances can change, making it even harder to determine zygosity based on looks alone.
The most reliable method to determine whether twins are identical or fraternal is a DNA test, like the DNA Family Check Home Twin Test. It provides conclusive results, regardless of the twins’ physical similarities or differences.

“My ex-girlfriend contacted me to say that I may be the father of her 5 year old daughter. Your test proved that I am the true biological father. It’s a life changer. Thank you.”
“I was very impressed with the ease and discretion of the testing process. I received my results quickly and quietly.”
“My husband has always mentioned that our two children maybe did not belong to him and accused me of being involved with his friend at the time that our children were conceived. I knew that this was not true. We finally decided to get a paternity test done to put an end to this. Sure enough, the results of the paternity test indicated greater than 99.9999% that he was the father of our children. Our family is now closer than ever before.”

“A++++. Near the date that my test was scheduled to be completed, I was so nervous that I ended up calling your lab almost once every hour. Thank you for putting up with me. I won’t forget your kindness.”
